About sisal

"A hidden paradise surrounded by stunning nature...."

Sisal is a picturesque tranquil fishing village on the northwest coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, 40 min north from Merida. A hidden paradise surrounded by stunning nature, filled with history and lovely inhabitants welcoming their visitors with a big smile. A place, where you can experience the laid back vibes of a typical mexican authentic beach town. The best-kept secret of Yucatan. Sisal is unique in many ways. One of it is its geographical location. Even though part of the mainland, it gives you the feeling being on an island, on a little oasis surrounded by nothing but nature. The turquoise emerald ocean water of the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the huge nature reserve with lagoon, mangroves and freshwater sinkholes (Cenotes) on the other side. Only one road connects Sisal to the rest of Yucatan and the world, what makes it special and still so untouched compared to many other yucatecan beach towns around.

Another reason making this little charming beach town so special is its rich history. Walking through the quiet streets of Sisal, it may be hard to imagine the importance and history of this little town. Back in the 19th century, during the green gold era (henequen boom), Sisal was the main seaport of Yucatan for the exportation of henequen. From the shores of this little village the henequen fiber was exported to the world. Packed up into boxes, stamped with the seal of the port ‘Sisal’, this plant became known worldwide by that name and even nowadays people still refer to this fiber as ‘sisal’. By the 1800s, Progreso had replaced Sisal as Yucatans most important port. Sisal’s economy and importance declined. Today, Sisal is a quiet little village, where fishing is the main source of income for the community and its surroundings. The only thing that reminds those busy port times are a few historical buildings in the center of Sisal, like the customs house among others.

Sisal is nowadays a natural unspoiled paradise, the perfect getaway for those seeking a unique mexican travel experience, reconnecting to nature, and to escape the busy everyday life. The miles of empty white sand beach, the emerald turquoise shallow ocean waters (in spring/summer time), a huge biosphere reserve with a lagoon, mangrove channels and little freshwater springs (Cenotes), flamingos and hundreds of other local and migratory birds, delicious fresh seafood, sandy streets and palmtrees, amazing sunrise and sunset views will leave you speechless and want to make you come back from time to time, or maybe stay forever.
